about 013
Our mission at CISeAL is to serve as an international platform for scientific engagement that creates opportunities to advance knowledge, enrich education, and improve health.

Our approach is driven by five strategic priorities that are advanced through our research initiatives and educational programs, and implemented at a local and national scale.

Jalil MJ 20161120 Iphone 45775Addressing Complexity
We conduct interdisciplinary research that deepens the understanding of the interrelated factors that often drive chronic and infectious diseases.

We apply our knowledge to the development of strategies and technology that promote health and combat disease.

Fostering Interaction
We work across institutions, disciplines, geographies, and cultures to explore approaches to public health challenges that combine globally and locally produced knowledge.

Creating Opportunities
We enable health research and education in Latin America through alliance building, infrastructure development, and the recruitment and retention of researchers and educators.

Putting Knowledge to Work
We bridge the theory-practice gap by employing research and education beyond laboratories and classrooms to apply knowledge and assess its ability to improve people’s health and well being.

Internationalizing Education
We have created opportunities for international academic learning within the context of science-driven, community-based research initiatives.

about 009

We envision a collaborative space in Latin America for diverse scientific interaction unified by a commitment to build better health for people whose well-being is undermined by the presence of infectious and chronic disease.

At CISeAL, we believe science plays a key role in advancing human well being. Since 2000, productive collaborations between PUCE, Ohio University in the United States and institutions around the world have fueled the development of CISeAL into a valuable resource for scientific research and education in Latin America.

MJ 20120713 48893 ChaquizcaAfter more than 18 years of strategic and creative interaction, we have created a comprehensive infrastructure and technical ‘know-how’ that provide the foundations for basic research, as well as for new transnational research and new education initiatives that explore complex relations between biological, social, economic, and environmental drivers of chronic and infectious diseases.

Working together, we can improve health and well being for those at risk or suffering from disease.

Our new state-of-the-art facility was designed to foster a broad range of infectious and chronic disease research to tackle large and complex global health challenges.

Our new 100,976 sq. ft. facility has 6 floors. It includes biosafety level 2 and 3 laboratories, an insectary, a small animal facility, climate controlled experimental rooms, offices for researchers, technicians, students and auxiliary administrative support personnel, meeting rooms fitted for videoconferences, a clinical research suite, and a data management center. This new infrastructure sets the stage for a new era of scientific collaborations focusing on improving population health knowledge and practice.about 007Instalaciones 1 MJ 20160419 Ipad 45726Jardin MJ 20160419 Ipad 45679
imagenes de about 009CISeAL was born as a small laboratory in 1999, and developed into a center thanks to the collaborative efforts of Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador and Ohio University, USA. The Center's growth was achieved with the support of Ecuadorian organisms, such as the Ministry of Public Health  and international organizations like the World Health Organization and the United States National Institutes of Health.

External funding allowed the Center to accommodate a growing number of students and researchers conducting research projects that had a deep impact in Ecuador. Joint work positioned CISeAL as a leading research organization at a national and global scale.

Letrero MJ 20170214 Iphone 45972The Center’s constant growth led to the expansion of its infrastructure. In June 2016, CISeAL had its grand opening in PUCE's new campus in Nayón, Ecuador (near Quito). The new state-of-the-art level 2 and 3 biohazard research facility can accommodate 22 permanent research groups and support personnel, as well as visiting researchers and students.

The cornerstone of our research initiatives has been to address several aspects related to Chagas disease and improving the quality and safety of donated blood in Ecuador.

Our scope has grown to include new research initiatives related to malaria, dengue, Zika, and other infectious diseases.  In addition, since 2003 CISeAL conducts the External Quality Control Program of all serological testing conducted by blood banks in Ecuador. Since 2013, the center's porfolio includes chronic diseases, particularly diabetes.
New Building in the Nayon Campus of PUCE
The Center for Research on Health in Latin America (CISeAL) was the result of collaborations between the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador and the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Institute (ITDI) at Ohio University that aimed at developing biomedical and biological research, epidemiological surveillance activities, and training and educational programs in Ecuador. The Center grew from an identified need for more research capacity for such initiatives within the country.

To achieve our goals, CISeAL works jointly with the Ministry of Public Health in Ecuador, the Ecuadorian Red Cross, PLAN International, and Ohio University. Our wide national and international collaborator network, and our highly-qualified personnel allow us to develop and implement research projects using cutting-edge technology to benefit the Ecuadorian population.

MJ 20120727 49459 SameOur efforts focus on developing the infrastructure and personnel needed to strengthen our capabilities to carry out research in Ecuador, according to international biosafety and bioethical standards.

CISeAL has relied on financial and technical support from multiple organizations, including WHO’s Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), European Commission and the National Sciences Foundation (NSF), among others
